Halo Wheels Win MBUK Grouptest!

Halo SAS Wheels came out on top in the latest MBUK wheeltest. Getting both a Big Value Award and the Grouptest Winner Award!

Here is the review:

MBUK Wheeltest Sept 2007:

Halo SAS:

BMX meets MTB in Ison’s super heavy-duty jump/DH/Freeride wheelset. The super wide 36mm rim will be able to take any size tyre around and will square off anything under 2.5in for maximum security and stability. The double wall, double eyelet rims will shrug off pretty much any fall going as well, so it’s no wonder that kit wrecking legends such as Chris Smith and Josh Bender are riding Halo now. Thirty six spokes string up the front, while the rear gets a woven wall of 48 straight gauge wires to spread stress and provide failsafe backup.
The hubs are the same Spin Doctor sets used on the Freedom Disc so the same versatility and durability comments apply here, there is also a 150mm rear width option available. A gold anodised option joins black ano and white powder coat in both 26in or 24in sizes too.
9/10 – Heavy but very well priced, as tough as you’ll get and adaptable too.
MBUK Big Value Award.
MBUK DH/FR Grouptest Winner.

Halo's Freedom Disc Wheels also received a great review scoring 8/10 and getting a Big Value Award!!!

Here is the review:

Halo Freedom Disc:

Halo’s Freedom Disc wheels aren’t light but you get a lot of strength, versatility and value in return. The deep section 28mm wide rim is impressively stiff and strong and will handle pretty big (2.3-2.4in) tyres without getting them undercut and unstable in corners. The stiffness does mean they’re more pinch-prone at lower pressures though, so keep them pumped.
The Spin Doctor Hubs are switchable from QR to 20mm through-axle at the front (but watch you don’t lose the adapters in transit) and QR, Saint, 10 or 14mm bolted axles at the back. The bearings are well sealed an have lasted well, while a new grease port extends freehub life too. Also available in White powder coat finish and 29er.
9/10 – Heavy, but very versatile, strong and good value all-rounder.
MBUK Big Value Award.

Freedom Disc Rims get great reviews!

In their recent hub/wheel test What MountainBike Magazine had this to say about the Halo Freedom Disc Rims:

Halo Freedom Disc: 8/10

Putting wheels under riders like legendary hucker Josh Bender and current UK freeride superstar Chris Smith has taught Halo a lot about making wheels tough. This means even their mid-weight Freedom Disc rims are seriously sturdy hoops. Over the past year or so these eyelted, deep section hoops have proved very capable of withstanding repeated heavy hits, ugly jumps and general freeride hammer and they suit big riders perfectly. The 28mm rim width fattens up 2.2 – 2.35in tyres well too, although the very stiff rim meant we’ve had to use slightly higher than normal pressures to stop pinch flats. It does create a noticeably more accurate wheel than XC hoops though, especially in heavy side load or random rock garden situations. It’s also available in white powder coat (£39.99) or a 29er size".

Performance – 8/10
Versatility – 9/10
Life – 7/10
Value – 7/10
Overall - 8/10
Verdict: Tough and sturdy mid-weight, mid-price all-mountain rim.

Gold Award for Halo Hubs!

In their recent hub/wheel test What MountainBike Magazine gave 9/10 and a Gold Award to Halo Spin Doctor Hubs. Here's what they had to say:

"Halo Spin Doctor Hubs: Gold Award 9/10

Halo has earned itself a great reputation for honest strength among the hardcore riding crowd, but these versatile hubs are worth a look for any trail riders. For a start, the Spin Doctor front is one of the few here that can be converted easily (alternative spacers provided) from QR to 20mm thru axle use. 3/8in or 14mm nutted stub axles are even available for BMX-style forks. The rear can also be switched, but only to 10mm or 14mm bolt thru or bolted, not Maxle-style 12mm. Front and rear come in white, gold or black and 32, 36 and 48 spoke drillings. The Freehubs now have a grease port built into the shell too, and despite deliberate and extensive grind time, our current set have been no trouble at all – with just occasional cassette removal and a squirt of grease.Wide spaced, oversized hub bearings are well protected behind multiple seals and again have proven trouble-free.
Weight is high bit they’ve proved super tough and stiff, even on jump wheels".

Performance – 8/10
Versatility – 9/10
Life – 8/10
Value – 10/10
Overall - 9/10
